Books Like Harry Potter... but for Adults
Are you trying to recapture the magic you experienced for the first time when reading Harry Potter? Worry not dear reader, for I have found some perfectly splendid books that will reignite that spellbinding feeling of finally finding a book you will refuse to put down. The books in this collection are not written for a younger audience and therefore the content is inherently more relevant to read as an adult.
Neverwhere
This is the first book I read on my quest to find a worthy J.K. Rowling replacement. The main character is terribly relatable. Richard Mayhew deals with getting tossed into a magical world in the most realistic way you can imagine, poorly. Let’s be honest the majority of us would not wondrously be transformed into exquisitely talented heroes. Luckily, Richard stumbles upon an eccentric young girl named Door, who sort of… eh… kind of… tries to keep him from dying.
The Starless Sea
I found this book to be deeply enchanting. The Starless Sea does not have a linear plot, but is a collection of stories within stories within stories. Zachary Ezra Rawlins stumbles upon a book which contains these stories and eerily enough stories about himself. Follow along as he submerges himself in the book and the magical worlds surrounding the stories.
Discworld
Buckle up for this series if you have not heard of the man, the myth, the legend - Terry Pratchett. What a gem this Author is for writing a whole 41 Discworld novels. One of the beauties about this series is you can read them in absolutely any order. That means no more waiting for you book to be available at the library, just grab whichever one and go.
The Magicians Trilogy
A perfect trilogy for Harry Potter lovers who are in their college years. Lev Grossman captures modern day hilarity and mixes it with old world magic flawlessly. The characters in the trilogy are wonderfully developed. Follow Quintin Cold Water and his Friends from his magical college hidden in New York as they dive into the Narnia-equse world of Fillory
Hopefully these books finds will inspire you to dip back into some Harry Potter-esque reading. I know I enjoyed each and every one of these novels. One last tip to rekindle the spark for the wizarding world is you can always reread Harry Potter. I have probably reread the whole series at least a few times and is just as good the second and third time.
