Desktop Displays, Refresh Rates So Good it Hertz
So you’ve finally done it? Finally pulled the trigger on that top of the line, RGB, Water-Cooled, BEHEMOTH of a gaming PC? Or maybe it’s a sleek video editing rig boasting a processor that’s got more cores than an apple orchard? Regardless of the machine, you’ll need a screen to bring those sweet visuals from your PC into the world. That’s where your display comes in. Read on and we’ll lay out the basics and give some solid options for your next computer monitor.
Desktop Displays
What to look for.
Picture Quality:
Probably the biggest consideration for most consumers is picture quality. This can come down to many factors, here we’ll cover display type and screen resolution.
Most Displays use an LCD display, using either TN or IPS technology. There’s a lot of technical jargon if we go any deeper here, so I'll link to this excellent PC Gamer Article for those of you who want to get nerdy. Suffice to say, TN LCDs will do what most consumers need, but if you want a truly professional experience, an IPS based screen can give an edge in video editing and gaming.
Bright colors and great features for a great price.
As far as resolution goes, you can find up to 4k and even 8k displays these days. These displays can provide insane resolutions if you have the hardware to back it up. A 1440p display is more than capable enough for most applications, especially considering that anything above that will require quite the graphics card to use to the full potential.
While Picture Quality is a major consideration, check out these other display features to make sure you get the best one for you.
Refresh Rate:
Measured in Hertz, this value is how many times in a second your screen image is refreshed. 60 to 75Hz is pretty standard but higher refresh rates are available, 75Hz does the job for most, but if you want to up your video game stats, a higher rate monitor might do the trick.
23” monitors are a common size, but larger might offer more productivity and fun if you have the space.
Size:
Measured in a diagonal length, your monitor size is normally constrained by the space available for your desktop setup. Bigger can be better, but make sure you consider what type of work (or play) you’ll be doing when choosing a monitor size.

And Fianlly HDMI vs. DVI:
The connector you use to interface between your PC and the monitor is more important than you may think. HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) and DVI (Digital Visual Interface) are the standards these days. Keep in mind that unlike DVI, HDMI carries an audio signal along with the screen image. This makes it a great all in one cable for monitors with built in speakers you’d like to utilize.
